Ao-nan was born in Harbin to a mother who had been active in the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_Fourth_Movement May Fourth Movement] in Beijing in 1919 but had to seek refuge in her husband's family home after his death before Ao-nan's birth. From thereon, Ao-nan grew up in paternal grandparents home along with his mother. After his mother's death in 1937, he fled to Nanjing and join the NRA to fight the Japaneses.
