Tanos's family originates from Kastelorizo, Greece, where they owned several businesses until being deported in the early 20th century.

Tanos made a small fortune smuggling goods in the Mediterranean during WWI then settled down in Venice to set up Xanthis Mediterranean Lines and marry, [[Caliope]], a 16 year old bride from his native island.
