Ju-ling was born in Northern Sichuan to a Qiang household lead by her mother and uncle. Her father had left the village to join the PLA during the Long March in 1935, when Ju-ling was 6. Although he never returned to Sichuan, Ju-ling kept a idealized image of her father and later joined the CCP in her teens acting as an covert agent within the Chengdu KMT intelligentsia.
