As the Daughter of an MIA German Navy officer based in Sweden during WWII, Marie obtained German citizenship and moved to Bremen with her Finnish mother in the 50's. In 1967, at age 22, she participated in demonstrations against the Shah of Iran in West Berlin after which she co-founded a militant group along with several other students. Intrigued by Middle Eastern issues, she was amongst the first European left wing militants to initiate ties with Palestinian and anti-Shah groups. Unable to return to Germany she settled in Spain under a new name and eventually married a US Naval Officer based in Rota, Andalucía.
