Yatom's first wife was pregnant when she was arrested and deported during a German raid on their village Lidice, (Bohemia), in the spring of 1942. He was a university professor in Prague at the time and only learned about the raid when he got back home. Realizing that he would never see his wife again, he made his way south and reached Palestine in 1943 where he joined an armed anti British Mandate Jewish organization.
