Anastasio Xanthis was born in Venice to Greek parents. His father Tanos owned Xanthis Mediterranean Lines which he had established in Venice during WWI.
In the summer of 1943, just days before the Germans occupied Venice, Anastasio, then 19, was pressed by his father to escort his mother and sister to safety in Australia on-board one of the company's ship.
